Nintendo discloses second-quarter earnings in August and is bound to remind the industry once again how many gamers aren’t perturbed by lower-fidelity graphics. The company already disclosed 10 million copies sold in three days for May’s “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” whose release falls within the same quarter as “The Super Mario Bros. It also has the Hollywood strikes to deal with as a member of the AMPTP, and union pushes are also growing in video games. Sony Pictures is the one major studio without a streaming service, but it almost doesn’t matter given the subscription push at Sony Interactive Entertainment. That’s akin to the largest tentpole budgets at Hollywood studios, many of which are feeling their own subscription pain from streaming losses. With all the finger-pointing in courtrooms over IP exclusivity, it’s become crystal clear that the high-end console brands are spending dramatic amounts of money on first-party games, to the tune of hundreds of millions. The Xbox version of that starter tier will soon offer 25 free games as Game Pass hikes its price, a reminder that for all the concern over PlayStation’s subscription expenses, Xbox is undoubtedly taking the bigger hit on account of first-party releases that debut on the service and console at the same time.īut if Xbox will soon be able to cover the cost of Game Pass with income brought in from Activision Blizzard, it begs a dour but necessary question: Does it make more sense for Xbox Game Pass to be available on PlayStation, with PS Plus scaled back? Sony doesn’t break down that total by tier, so it’s difficult to know how many subscribers never bothered to upgrade from Essential, its traditional tier that offers online play, exclusive store discounts and a few free games each month. The timing of Sony Game and Network Services’ strong decline in year-over-year operating income coincides with the relaunch of PS Plus in Q2 2022, implicating the double whammy of third-party sales dips and licensing expenses against PlayStation’s bottom line.Įven if the new and improved service helps prevent players from signing up for Xbox Game Pass at its voluminous entry points, Sony Group’s supplemental filings show PS Plus subscribers were stuck at 47.4 million in the last quarter, the same as before it relaunched.
